Polly
è uno dei grandi classici dei Nirvana. Una canzone musicalmente pacata con un
testo piuttosto pesante.
Il brano è
basato su una storia vera, accaduta nel 1987: una ragazza di quattordici anni
viene rapita, stuprata e torturata da un uomo; l'unica opportunità che ha di
fuggire è quella di pregare il rapitore di slegarla.
La prima
versione di Polly, conosciuta col titolo di Cracker e registrata
nel 1988, è molto più lenta delle successive e presenta variazioni nel testo. La
versione più nota è quella pubblicata in Nevermind (vedi testo sopra). Si
tratta di un'esecuzione molto pacata e regolare, in cui Cobain riesce a
trasmettere un senso di disagio angoscioso.
La versione
di Incesticide, pubblicata col titolo di (New Wave) Polly, è
invece una rivisitazione in chiave spiccatamente rock; è molto più veloce di
tutte le altre versioni e gli strumenti vengono suonati prepotentemente. In
generale, la sua velocità è adatta al carattere di Incesticide.
Nella
versione registrata dal vivo a Londra nel 1989 e pubblicata in From The Muddy
Banks Of The Wishkah, Kurt canta normalmente per due terzi della canzone,
per poi gridare l'ultima strofa e l'ultimo ritornello. La riuscita finale è
piuttosto gradevole.
La versione
acustica di Polly eseguita per l'MTV Unplugged In New York
assomiglia, per la sua lentezza, alle prime Cracker, è più melodiosa ed
armonica e forse, musicalmente, è la più gradevole di tutte.
Polly
vanta quasi 180 esibizioni dal vivo, una delle quali è stata inserita nel
singolo di In Bloom.
