quanto afferma Krist Novoselic, Spank Thru è la prima canzone in assoluto
dei Nirvana. La sua composizione risale con buona probabilità al 1985; da quell'anno,
il brano è stato registrato in studio ben cinque volte, di cui due per dei demo
e una per uno show radiofonico. Tuttavia i Nirvana non hanno mai incluso in un
loro album la canzone; una delle cinque registrazioni in studio è però stata
inserita nelle compilation Sub Pop 200 e Sub Rock City (a tale
versione si riferisce il testo riportato sopra e il clip in sottofondo).
Spank
Thru è stata eseguita dal vivo per più di ottanta volte, tutte comprese tra
il 1987 e il 1992.
Di queste
esecuzioni, una era già confluita nel singolo di Sliver, mentre un'altra
fu scelta da Novoselic per From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah.
La canzone
alterna parti tranquille a parti aggressive, parti parlate a parti cantate; il
testo non affronta un tema univoco ma spazia tra più argomenti.
A differenza
della registrazione in studio, quella dal vivo contenuta in From The Muddy
Banks Of The Wishkah, oltre ad avere differenze nel testo, sembra cantata in
modo più distaccato, quasi svogliato (ma forse questa prestazione deriva non
tanto dalla volontà di Cobain, quanto dal suo stato psico-fisico al momento
dell'esecuzione).
Tra le
canzoni meno conosciute del gruppo, Spank Thru è sicuramente una delle
più interessanti, per le frequenti variazioni di tema che la contraddistinguono.
