Where Did
You Sleep Last Night è un'antica canzone folk, composta con buona
probabilità negli ultimi decenni del 1800. Il primo, leggendario esecutore del
brano fu Huddie Leadbetter, in arte Leadbelly, cantante folk la cui carriera
giunse all'apice intorno agli anni trenta e quaranta, interrotta solo da una
permanenza di un anno in carcere.
Alla morte,
per malattia, nel 1949, Leadbelly aveva già segnato un'epoca, interpretando
canzoni senza tempo che affrontavano temi anche pesanti, e che furono ripescate
e interpretate da molti artisti successivi; sembra che Where Did You Sleep
Last Night, conosciuta anche col titolo di In The Pines, sia stata
registrata da più di cento artisti.
Nel più
recente 2002, Tom Jones ha reinventato
Black Betty, un altro brano del cantante folk.
Si pensa
appartenga a Leadbelly anche Black & White Blues, brano strumentale che
Cobain registrò durante una sessione in studio, ma non pubblicò mai.
Where Did
You Sleep Last Night fu registrata anche nell'ambito del progetto per il
singolo "a metà" con gli Screaming Trees The Jury / Lithium.
Il brano fu eseguito da Mark Lanegan (degli Screaming), insieme a Krist
Novoselic al basso e a Kurt Cobain alla chitarra e come voce corale. Accantonato
il progetto del singolo, il brano fu pubblicato nell'album da solista di Lanegan
The Winding Sheet.
La canzone
tratta di un orribile delitto e di come le persone debbano fare attenzione ai
luoghi che frequentano perché potrebbero diventare le prossime vittime.
La Where
Did You Sleep Last Night di Leadbelly è una canzone piuttosto cupa, dove una
voce ben più lirica di quella di Cobain "recita" i tristi versi.
Pur
trattandosi dello stesso brano, non è possibile paragonare l'esecuzione
originale con quella dei Nirvana, dato che lo scarto temporale tra le due è
troppo grande.
La versione
che Cobain e soci presentarono all'unplugged (che fra l'altro Lanegan ammise
essere molto migliore della propria) si concludeva con la ripetizione urlata di
due strofe. Questa registrazione chiude l'MTV Unplugged In New York così
come il CD Nirvana.
