Of Fire si chiude il trittico di cover dei Meat Puppets, che anche in questo
caso hanno partecipato all'esecuzione.
Al termine
della stessa Cobain chiese "How was the Meat Puppets?", riferendosi alle ultime
tre canzoni eseguite.
La prima
versione di Lake Of Fire apparve nel 1984 nell'album Meat Puppets II.
Si trattava di una canzone sforzata, poco melodica, con una voce solista che si
avventurava su note troppo alte. Il brano suonava, nel complesso, come un
lamento.
In occasione
dell'MTV Unplugged In New York, il pezzo fu preso in mano dai Nirvana,
che lo alleggerirono, affidando alla chitarra un ruolo di maggior rilievo. La
voce rimase sforzata ed acuta, ma furono aggiunti giri d'accordi e parti
strumentali, che contribuirono a rendere pił piacevole il brano, oltre che a
dilatarne la lunghezza.
Una nuova
versione di Lake Of Fire, ispirata in pieno a quella dei Nirvana,verrą in
seguito pubblicata dai Meat Puppets nel loro album del 1994 Too High To Die.
Questa volta sarą la voce, unico elemento rimasto "duro", ad essere alleggerita;
per farlo verrą semplicemente introdotto un controcanto.
Da rock
pesante ed arduo, Lake Of Fire ha dunque subito una composita metamorfosi
fino a diventare un brano pop-rock alternativo.
