Very Ape è un brano che non ci si
aspetterebbe di trovare in un disco come In Utero, ma piuttosto in un
Bleach o un Incesticide, viste le sonorità un po' primitive
della canzone; essa però compare proprio nell'album della maturità musicale
dei Nirvana: In Utero.
Per Very Ape, Cobain si ispirò alla
canzone di Neil Young My My Hey Hey. Tale brano contiene la frase
'Out of the blue, and into the black' mentre in Very Ape appaiono i
versi 'Out of the sky, into the dirt.
Il brano fu eseguito dal vivo in poco più di
dieci concerti, quasi tutti tenutisi nel febbraio 1992.
